African American Theater Arts hits mark with
Wilson's 'Seven Guitars'
By Ann Bennett
The African American Theater Arts Troupe is celebrating its
12th season at UC Santa Cruz,
and the company, led with love and inspiration by the irrepressible Don Williams,
is celebrating
in fine fashion with a splendid production of August Wilson's stunning play,
"Seven Guitars"...
The play is rich and strong in language and images, its characters perfectly
balanced
on the tightrope of injustice as they strove to survive and even dared to dream
of a better future...
Under Williams' directing, the cast of seven captures the mood and essence of
postwar
America and especially the black experience of that time...
Director Don Williams has done an impressive job with his cast drawing from
the
performances that define a time before their experience. Pacing is especially
good,
moving from languid to intense with nice precision, and the emotional texture
of the drama is created with great care. "Seven Guitars" is a fine
play,
and the AATAT production is excellent...
